Thank you so much for attending our Back-to-School Night. If you were unable to make it last night, I will send home the information with your child.
The homework packet will come home with your child today. This week’s packet will consist of the Drops in the Bucket pages (math page 3 and ELA page B3), and the Spelling ABC page for list two. Students will also continue to practice the strategy of visualizing for their reading log. Finally, your child will write about the Gospel message. Like I mentioned at Back-to-School Night, I do not want students to be overwhelmed. Let me know if you feel that homework should be adjusted for your child.
We completed our first week of spelling pre-tests and post/challenge tests. Thank you for working with your child on the spelling pattern…short a. Next week we will work on the spelling pattern…short i.
Next week is our First Reconciliation meeting. It is on Thursday, September 19th. This parent meeting is designed to get all 2nd grade students registered for the sacraments and to share information about this year’s program. Please make sure that you bring your child’s baptismal certificate, if he/she was not baptized at St. Mark Parish.
Next week is the beginning of our MAP testing. Please try to help your child get to bed on time and help him/her eat a good breakfast. We are set up to take our first test on Friday, September 20th at 11:00. This will be our math test. On Monday, September 23rd, at 9:05 we will take our reading test. On Friday, September 27th we will take our ELA test.
A Scholastic book order is coming home today. This book order is due Friday, September 27th. You can order online now too! If you go to https://orders.scholastic.com/RH943 you will be asked to sign in or set up an account. You will need to connect your child to my class (RH943), then you can order away! Thank you!
This week in math we spent quite a bit of time learning about place value. We talked about finding the value of a digit in a two digit number. We created a “tens and ones” chart and practiced listening for the value within a number (example, you say sixty in sixty-one, so the value is sixty).
In religion, we are learning about the Trinity, the virtue of faith and St. Martha. We read from the bible to learn more about St. Martha and the students had a great discussion about her brother Lazareth too!
In reading and writing we are reviewing spelling patterns for long vowel sounds and diagraphs. We will continue to work on visualizing this next week. We are also working on writing paragraphs and how to use a dictionary.
In Science, we talked about the engineering process. The steps that they learned about were…
- Define a problem
- Plan and build
- Test and improve
I am excited to watch our little scientists/engineers learn and grow throughout the year.
