Return to 8th Grade
September 9, 2009
Welcome to this exciting
year in the life of your student. It will be filled with school work and
activities both inside and outside the St. Mark community. If the first week is
any indication, it will be quite busy.
We will have our
Curriculum Night on Thursday, October 8th. If you have any concerns before then,
please don’t hesitate to call me at school (364-1633) or at my home (363-3227).
In general, your student
should have all the school supplies he/she needs. About halfway through the year
you may need to replenish paper, pens and pencils. You should expect homework
every night, including weekends. We have given each student a planner in which
to write down assignments. In addition, you can go to the school website at
stmss.org and click on “Homework Hero” to get an updated assignment list.
In Religion, part of their grade is a five question quiz on Mondays
regarding the Sunday readings; we will have previewed the readings the Friday
before.
One thing that may be of
concern to you is admission to a Catholic high school. I am sending home a
calendar with the students as soon as it is made available to me, but if you
don’t see it, the following are websites where you can get information about
important dates:
archbishopmurphyhs.org
holynames-sea.org
blanchetk12wa.us
odea.org
seaprep.org
If this is your first
child and the process is new to you, there are several veteran parents who could
answer questions about particular high schools or about the process:
Archbishop Murphy
Bishop Blanchet Holy
Names
O’Dea
Van Hollebeke
Dato
Encarnacion
Velasco
Snedden
Encarnacion
Some things you want to
do in the near future:
1)
Pick up or
download an application for the high school(s) in which you are interested.
2)
Register for an
entrance exam. Exam dates are December 5th or 6th for
Archbishop Murphy, Bishop Blanchet & Seattle Prep. Exam dates are December 12th
or 13th for Holy Names or O’Dea.
3)
Call the
Admissions Department for the school in which
you are interested to spend a day there if your student wants to get a
feel for the school before making a decision. PLEASE DON”T BOOK A DAY IN THE
FIRST TWO WEEKS OF DECEMBER because we will be practicing for the Nativity.
4)
Ask lots of
questions. We are here to help you.
I am looking forward to
teaching your student. I hope we all
have a wonderful year together.
God bless you,
Tami Martin
