St. Mark Athletic Program

Mandatory Coaches Training

Greetings all! Please note that coaches must be certified this year through the Play Like A Champion Today workshop.  Coaches for the remainder of the year are expected to be trained prior to their first game/match/meet of the season. Dan McGinty (University of Portland) and our local trainers will be presenting 3 opportunities for basketball coaches to get trained. The goal of the workshop is to ground our coaches in their role of athletics in a Catholic Christian frame as well as to give them practical tools to be a more effective coach. You can go directly to their website at www.playlikeachampion.org for more information.

WHO: All head coaches in all the sports will be required to be certified by the end of this year. For each workshop, we are limited to the first 100 registrations so please have your folks sign up as early as possible and make sure that those who sign up do attend. We will create a waiting list past the first 100 registrations.

Please also note: these sessions will include the context of Catholic faith. Additional sessions will be set up with the non-Catholic schools for their coaches but coaches from all parishes/schools are welcome to participate in this session.

WHAT: Please bring a pen or other writing instrument and be prepared for having small group discussion about the material that is being covered. This is one of the attributes of this program that we think will increase the retention rate of the material as well the effectiveness of the program.

COST: Cost for each coach in attendance is $30.00 Only checks will be accepted and should be made payable to CYO. It would be ideal if the parish could write one check for all participants but we will accept personal checks if necessary. If there might be an issue with the cost of the program for your coaches and your parish/school may need financial assistance, please let us know.

WHAT IF MY PLANS CHANGE? If a registered participant notifies us before end of business day on Thursday that they will not be able to attend, we will contact people on the waiting list. If there is a change in plans for your coach on Friday, and they do not show up, we are going to ask that they still pay for the workshop if there are people on the waiting list who do not get to attend. It would be better to have that coach find someone else in the parish/school to attend in their place.

HOW DO MY COACHES REGISTER? Please fill out the attached excel spreadsheet and email back to us at cyo@seattlearch.org as an attachment.

1) Complete and pass a background check PRIOR to contact with youth

2) Read, understand and sign the following polices within 3 days of contact with youth

a) Policy for Prevention of & Response to Sexual Abuse, Sexual Misconduct & Sexual Harassment

b) Code of Professional Conduct for Church Personnel

3) First year coaches are required to complete the year 1 training (Called to Protect, 3 hour course) within 90 days of contact. They can have no contact with youth after 90 days until completed.

4) Those that have coached and taken CTP in the previous year (2007-08) are required to complete an online training prior to May 31, 2009. There will be no contact allowed in following year (2009-10) until completed.

If a coach from the previous year (2007-08) did not complete the CTP training, they are not allowed to coach until they have done so. It is the responsibility of the parish and or school to verify that coaches have completed the necessary training.
